The second Iowa Working Families Summit will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Scheman Building in Ames.

Larry Cohen, former President of Communication Workers of America and Labor Chair of Our Revolution will be the keynote speaker for the event.

The theme for this year’s event is “Standing Together. Fighting Back.”

Attendees will not only hear from everyday Iowans but they will also hear and learn from policy and advocacy experts.

Dozens of co-sponsoring organizations planning the summit will offer many different opportunities for attendees to take action themselves.

“The Working Families Summit is about bringing everyday Iowans together,” said Ken Sagar, President of the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. “Working families in our state are struggling to get by, and we need to find new ways to bring this country back to those that make it work.”

There are many different things attendees can take part in such as: a panel discussion, “From the Ground Up: Growing Iowa’s Resistance;” and classes on the future of health care, organizing to support public education, local actions on raising minimum wages, how to run for local office, etc.

There will also be music from folk singer Iris Dement who will perform during registration time at the start of the event.

The event is free, but registration is required at http://iowaworkingfamilies.com.

Lunch will also be provided.

Nearly 500 people attended the first Iowa Working Families Summit back in 2015, and organizers are expecting to see another large crowd for this year’s event.
