Jhoanmy Luque named Female Athlete of the Year

Iowa State jumper Jhoanmy Luque was named Iowa State’s Female Athlete of the Year following her successful junior campaign.
Luque, who came to Iowa State from Venezuela, set a Venezuelan national record in the long jump this year. She jumped 21-7 ¼ at the NCAA West Preliminaries. Along with setting the Venezuelan national record, that jump also set the Iowa State record.
Luque is the 10th women’s track and field or cross country athlete to be named Iowa State’s Female Athlete of the Year. She is the first track and field athlete to receive the honor since Christina Hillman won it in 2014.
In her three years at Iowa State, Luque has won three Big 12 titles and received eight All-America honors. She was named the Big 12 Women’s Indoor Performer of the Year.
“It means everything to be chosen as Iowa State’s Female Athlete of the Year,” Luque said in a press release. “I remember during my freshman year, seeing my teammates being honored at the football game, and thought that was really awesome. I wanted to be athlete of the year one day, and I did it. I am really happy and proud of myself.”
Luque has one year of eligibility remaining as a Cyclone.
