Former Iowa State defensive back Mike Johnson has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and one year of probation following charges of disorderly conduct.
Johnson, 23, was arrested after police were called at 1:17 a.m. on February 23 at the 35 block of Frederiksen Court in Ames.
The reported victim said Johnson tried to strangle her to the point where she “saw stars,” according to the report.
The report stated the reported victim had a swollen upper lip, a nickel-sized bruise on her right cheek and two red marks behind her left ear and the back of her head. She also had blood on her right hand and “red” and “darkened” marks on her neck.
Johnson said he “had to push the victim away, hold her back, and stop her” to prevent her from breaking his laptop. Johnson had a laceration on his left hand and claimed the reported victim bit him, according to the report.
The reported victim was initially hesitant to tell ISU Police details of the altercation, saying she “didn’t want [Johnson] to lose what he has going in his athletic career.”
After being initially charged with domestic assault, Johnson eventually pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct on April 27. He was sentenced Wednesday morning.
Johnson’s one year of probation will include anger management, according to court filings. He was also sentenced to a fine of $65 and court costs.
“That’s not what happened in the story,” Johnson said to reporters after the sentencing. “It was just a misunderstanding.
“None of that ever happened –that hitting and stuff — so it was just a misunderstanding with everything, and I got the short end of the sticks.”
Following the sentencing, coach Matt Campbell confirmed that Johnson is no longer part of the Iowa State football team.
