Iowa State gets shut out for third straight game
May 13, 2017
Iowa State’s offensive deficiencies have haunted them throughout the Big 12 Tournament. That trend continued in a 1-0 loss to Texas Tech.
Sophomore pitcher Emma Hylen started her third game in two days for the Cyclones. Hylen got herself in a couple of jams early in the game, but she avoided major damage, only allowing one run.
“[Hylen was] actually pretty worn down in that last game, and she did a great job mentally of just finding a way to do her job,” coach Jamie Trachsel said.
After a second inning run, Hylen was lights out, going the distance and pitching all seven innings. Hylen finished the game with five straight scoreless innings.
After being shutout in two games yesterday, the Iowa State offense dealt with similar issues today. In the bottom of the second inning, the Cyclones got a two-out rally started.
Sophomore outfielder Kirsten Caudle lined a single to right field. Two walks followed Caudle, loading the bases.
Trachsel elected to have sophomore Sally Woolpert pinch hit for freshman Megan Schweitzer, but Woolpert grounded out to shortstop for the third out.
In the fourth inning, the Cyclones stormed back. Sophomore catcher Kaylee Bosworth led off with a single. Then, Caudle reached on an error.
After a pitching change and a popup, freshman shortstop Logan Schaben walked. The bases were loaded with only one out.
Texas Tech worked out of the inning by forcing a flyout and a ground ball. The Iowa State rally was diffused.
The Cyclones mounted one more rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schweitzer smacked a single to start the inning. Freshman second baseman Sami Williams rifled a double, putting two runners on base.
Iowa State had life.
Junior slugger Kelsey McFarland was intentionally walked, loading the bases with one out. Once again, the Cyclones failed to get a clutch hit, stranding the bases loaded for the third time and ending the game.
With the loss, the Cyclones finished 0-3 at the Big 12 Tournament. Iowa State got outscored 15-0 on the weekend.
“It’s a game of execution, and we just fell a little short on that [from] time to time this weekend,” Trachsel said.
