Special Olympics Summer Games to begin this week

Summer has returned to Iowa, which means it’s time for Special Olympics’ Summer Games. The Iowa Special Olympics Summer Games will run from May 25-27 and take place around the Iowa State campus.

This year marks 33 years of Special Olympics Summer Games in Iowa.

Events include track and field, tennis, bocce, cycling, swimming, soccer and skill games.

More than 2,500 athletes, 1,500 volunteers and 1,200 coaches are expected to be involved in the three-day event.

Hilton Coliseum will host the opening ceremony, The opening ceremony is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Other venues include Beyer Hall, Forker Building, Forker tennis courts, Hilton Coliseum and the Lied Center.

Parking and travel

Beach Road will be closed to through traffic from Lincoln Way to the power plant from 7.30 a.m. until 10 p.m. both Thursday and Friday. In addition, South 4th Street will be closed from Beach Avenue to west of the Jack Trice Stadium parking entrance, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

The following parking lots will be closed or open to only Special Olympics and handicap permit holders, per the Iowa State website.

Beyer Hall: Lot 3, Friday (all day).

Forker Building: Lot 50A, Thursday and Friday (all day).

Iowa State Center: All lots, Thursday (12:01 a.m.-5 p.m.); commuter parking will move to the football stadium parking lots, with a CyRide stop located at lot S3.

Lied Center: Lots 57 and 100, Thursday and Friday (all day, all vehicles).

Maple-Willow-Larch residence area: Lots 56, 63, 80, 89, 90 and 91, Thursday and Friday (all day).

Richardson Court residence area: Lots 54, 54A, 66, 67, 82, 83, Thursday and Friday (all day).
