The Iowa State softball team closed out a record-breaking weekend in Austin, Texas, with a win in game-three over the Longhorns.

Iowa State (18-32, 3-12 Big 12) downed Texas (25-20, 4-8 Big 12) to secure the weekend series 2-1. This is the Cyclones’ first series win against the Longhorns in school history and their first Big 12 series victory since 2013.

The Cyclones were on a mission early as they struck first in the top of the first inning. Iowa State broke the record for stolen bases in a single-season with 90 when Kelsey McFarland stole her first of two bases on the day.

Sami Williams and McFarland scored on a Texas error to put an exclamation point on the inning.

Texas would cut the Cyclone lead in half in the bottom of the first with an RBI single up the middle. The Longhorns brought home another run in the third inning to tie the game.

Iowa State regained the lead with a run in the fourth and fifth innings.

Emma Hylen and the Cyclone defense did everything they could to hold the two-run lead. Hylen pitched her second complete game of the series, allowing just six hits in the outing. The Cyclones held on to win the game 4-2 over Texas.

Up next, the Cyclones square off with in-state rival UNI Wednesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The game is the first of six straight home games to close out the regular season.
