With spring coming around the corner, many may wonder what there is to do. While there is a treasure trove of activities on campus, some yearn for a little more adventure. Ames is conveniently located in between several great parks that are great for hiking or camping. There are many options, so here are a few to choose from.

Non-Camping:

Inis Grove Park: Just a stone’s throw from campus, Inis Grove Park is on Duff Avenue. Inis Grove Park offers a playground, open space, a shelter and even a trail through the woods. More information can be found here.

Ada Hayden Heritage Park: Located on the north end of Ames, Ada Hayden is held with very high esteem. Ada Hayden boasts hiking trails and a pond for fishing. There are also grills. Other information about the wildlife and plantlife can be found here.

Peterson Park: Also situated north of Ames, Peterson park is a 200-acre area with hiking and horse trails, a pond for fishing and boating, river access and space for public hunting. Find more information here.

Camping:

Ledges State Park: Quite possibly the most well-known park in the area. Founded in 1924, Ledges has a history of providing outdoor recreation for generations. According to the Department of Natural Resources, archeological evidence dating back 4,000 years ago has been found. There are hiking and biking trails, the Des Moines river for boating or fishing, shelters for eating and of course campsites for camping. More information can be found here.

Story County Conservation: Located on 180th Street in Ames, this campground also includes the Conservation Center. In the Conservation Center there are administrative offices, educational displays, a multi-purpose room and a deck with outdoor seating. The campground also has trails for hiking, off-road bike trails, and a river and pond for fishing. Find more information here.
