A lot was on the line for both West Virginia and Iowa State on Friday night.

The winner of the matchup in Morgantown, West Virginia, would earn the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Championship, and add yet another quality win to its NCAA Tournament resume.

And while it was tight early on, second-half offensive woes plagued the Cyclones. No. 10 West Virginia (24-7, 12-6) beat No. 24 Iowa State (20-10, 12-6) 87-76, ending the Big 12 regular season.

Iowa State and West Virginia were neck and neck in the first half, heading into the locker room with just a one-point differential between the two teams. Naz Mitrou-Long kept the Cyclones in the game, thanks to his five three-point buckets in the half.

West Virginia opened the second half on a 7-0 run, giving it an eight-point lead. The Mountaineers continued its hot streak, jumping on a 12-0 run minutes later to give them a 14-point lead.

Iowa State’s offense, though, never returned to the game. It went on two major draughts without a made field goal in the second half, one nearly four minutes long and the other nearly six — and West Virginia took advantage. They ran on Iowa State, quickly extending its lead to 17 points.

By then, the lead was simply insurmountable, with West Virginia cruising to an 11-point win.

Mitrou-Long led the Cyclones with 22 points behind six shots from behind the arc. Monte Morris and Deonte Burton each added 17 points, and Matt Thomas put up 16. The Cyclones went 23-60 from the field, shooting just 38 percent.

Daxter Miles Jr. put up 23 points for the Mountaineers. Nathan Adrian added 16 points.

With the win, West Virginia will now be the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Championships. Iowa State will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed, depending on the result of the Baylor/Texas game on Saturday.

The Big 12 Championship will begin on Wednesday from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
