Here are some of the big news stories that you may have missed over the weekend:

  • Budget cuts to hit Iowa public universities – An additional $2.75 million will be cut from Iowa’s three public universities, which adds to the many other cuts the universities will have to make. A total of $18 million will be cut from the three public universities’ combined budgets.
  • 2017 Varieties finals take place – The Varieties finals took place this weekend. Four vignettes and four pairs performed, either creating a new performance or repeating their performance from semi-finals.
  • Men’s track and field finishes fifth in Big 12 Indoor Championships  – Many of the men competed in the finals on Saturday but only one pulled out one win. The men earned a total of 73.5 points and ended in fifth place in the tournament.
  • Women’s track and field finishes eighth at the Big 12 Championship – Jhoanmy Luque guided the Cyclones with first-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. Others had strong performances as well, but they were not strong enough to catch up to Baylor, which finished first with 129.5 points.
  • Third-place finish for swim and dive at Big 12s – The team spent four days at the Big 12 Swim and Dive Championships in Austin, Texas. It walked away with third place with a final score of 591.5.
  • Cyclone softball falls in final game of UAB/Samford tournament – The Cyclones fell to Murray State in their final game of the weekend. They are now 0-5 when the opposing team scores the first run of the game.
  • Delta Lambda Phi hosts drag show – Delta Lambda Phi hosted its second annual drag show. Members of the group and professional drag queens dressed up in elaborate costumes and performed. This event was held as a philanthropy for the fraternity to raise money for The Trevor Project.
  • Men’s basketball upsets No. 9 Baylor – Iowa State and Baylor were tied at the half, but the Cyclones came back as strong as ever in the second half and pulled out a big win. The Cyclones won 72-69 and are tied for second place in the Big 12 with West Virginia.
