The official 2017 Oscar Nominations are out, and director Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” leads the pack with 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress.

In other news…

Mel Gibson makes a triumphant return to the silver screen after being blacklisted for ten years by Hollywood.

Surprisingly, even one of the most critically panned movies of the year can receive an Oscar nomination. Along with “A Man Called Ove” and “Star Trek Beyond,” Warner Bros’ “Suicide Squad” was nominated for Best Makeup and Hair.

After sweeping all seven of its nominated categories in the Golden Globes, “La La Land” will be a hard film to beat in the 89th Academy Awards. But as evidenced by previous Best Picture wins, “Crash” and “Shakespeare in Love” who took home the top prize over “Brokeback Mountain” and “Saving Private Ryan” respectfully, anything is possible.

The 89th Annual Academy Awards will air live, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, Sunday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. Central Time on ABC.
