Iowa State wrestling loses big on senior day

Iowa State wrestling knew it had a tough task in front of it when it hosted No. 13 Minnesota on Sunday.

The Cyclones lost 40-7 on senior day.

The dual started off on a back for for Iowa State when unranked Chris Pfarr got in on a single leg against No. 10 Lelund Weatherspoon at 174 pounds.

Chris continued to find success with the single-leg eventually beating Weatherspoon by decision 10-4.

Next up was fellow senior Carson Powell. Powell had trouble staying off his back. He lost by major decision, 10-2.

After two straight losses by seniors, sophomore Marcus Harrington took the mat against No. 2 Brett Pfarr at 197 pounds. Harrington got the first takedown, but that seemed to only ignite the flame under Brett.

Brett got a number of takedowns before he pinned Harrington.

Heavyweight Michael Kroells also got a pin for Minnesota over Quean Smith to extend its lead to 24-0 heading into intermission.

Iowa State got it briefly turned around as the 133-pound Earl Hall put on an offensive clinic. He beat No. 17 Mitch McKee 16-9.

The good feelings didn’t last for Iowa State as John Meeks got pinned at 141 pounds.

Gabe Moreno followed up the match with his most complete match of the season. He got takedowns when he wanted them and rode hard. Moreno won by major decision 8-0.

Iowa State ended the dual with two losses. Colston DiBlasi lost by major decision 9-1 and Logan Breitenbach got pinned.

Next up for the Cyclones is the Big 12 Championships beginning on March 4.
