Iowa State softball gets three wins, breaks school record in Tennessee State Tournament

Iowa State softball did not take any breaks after its first day of play at the Tennessee State Tournament, held in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Cyclones (7-3) started out the rainy Saturday beating Alabama A&M (3-6) 21-1, a new school record for a single game’s runs. The previous record, 20, was set in back in 1976 when the team played Drake.

The game lasted five innings. The Cyclones started out the first two innings with six runs each. They also ended the game with six more runs in the final inning.

Niki Turner and Sami Williams each hit a homerun in the first game of the day.

Iowa State got its fourth straight win when it played Tennessee State (3-6 Friday afternoon, winning 9-0.

This time, Iowa State did not score until the fourth inning, where they scored five runs. They scored two in each remaining inning.

Starting pitcher Brianna Weilbacher was on a strikeout streak against TSU with 11 total, a career high. Williams also hit two more homeruns.

The team finished off the tournament with a 2-0 win against Tennessee State on Sunday. Like each game this weekend, the Cyclones scored first.
