New charges filed against Campustown shooting suspects
February 24, 2017
The Ames Police Department filed additional charges against the four men suspected of injuring three people during a drive-by shooting early Sunday morning on Welch Avenue.
Terrion Maxfield, 20, of Milwaukee, and Desmon Siner, 19, of Milwaukee, were arrested on attempted murder charges, along with Charles Smith, 20, of Milwaukee, and Traveion Henry, 21, of Milwaukee, who were arrested for attempted murder (aiding and abetting.)
Attempted murder is considered a Class B felony.
The Ames Police Department said Friday, however, that all four men face the attempted murder charge, and additional charges of willful injury causing serious injury and intimidation with a deadly weapon. The latter two are both Class C felonies.
All four men are still being held in the Story County Jail.
The arrests root from an early Sunday morning shooting in Campustown which resulted in three individuals facing non-life threatening injuries.
At about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police responded to reports of a fight outside a bar on Chamberlain Road and Stanton Avenue. A short time later, a red passenger vehicle pulled up along the 200 block of Welch Avenue and opened fire into the crowd.
Antwane Gordon, 24, of Fort Dodge; and Naronne Cole Jr., 22, of Fort Dodge; who police believe where involved in the original fight, were shot. Kyle Heaton, 22, of Ames; who was a bystander, was also injured.
Two Ames Police officers, who were already on scene investigating the original fight, opened fired on the suspects’ vehicle. Sgt. Derek Grooters and Officer Clint Hertz are both veterans of the Ames Police department. They have both been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
