Iowa State men’s golf end day one at PGA West tied for 5th

The Iowa State men’s golf team finished the first round of the Prestige at PGA West tied for fifth place with a 288 (+4). No. 27 Arizona State is also in fifth place.

The Cyclones started strong with the help of freshman Sam Vincent and seniors Ruben Sondjaja and Nick Voke.

Vincent started off the day below par, before finding a comfortable groove and completing a total of nine eagles. Afterwards he finished his last five holes over two par to finish the day two over the current par. He is currently tied for 31st place.

“Ruben and Nick played solid. Great to see them get off to a good start,” head coach Andrew Tank said.

Both Sondjaja and Voke are currently tied fourth place individually.

Voke initially started the day with five straight holes being two over par, but managed to find consistency after the 16th hole and finished with three birdies and an eagle.

Sondjaja started the day even for the par and only progressed with every hole. With 13 holes under par, and two eagles his is currently two under the overall par.

“Denzel and Tripp struggled, but will do better next two days,” Tank said.

Both Denzel Ieremia and Tripp Kinney are tied for 65th place after ending the first round six strokes above par.

The second day of the Prestige at PGA West will resume on Tuesday in La Quinta, California.
