Man killed on train tracks in west Ames

UPDATE: The Ames Police Department identified Ames resident Charles Vestal, 27, as the victim in a Friday train/pedestrian accident Sunday morning.
Vestal, according to a press release, reportedly laid down on the railroad tracks in front of the approaching train.
Police responded to the scene, which was approximately 200 yards west of the N. Dakota Avenue crossing, after receiving a call from the Union Pacific Railroad.
Vestal is a local Ames musician better known as Flavor Basket. He has performed in years previous at the Maximum Ames Music Festival, MAMF.
ORIGINAL: A man was killed on the train tracks in west Ames near Reliable Street Friday, according to the Ames Police Department.
Lt. Heath Ropp, with Ames Police, said that officers arrived onto the scene at approximately 12:15 p.m.
Ropp said the individuals at the scene when Daily reporters arrived at 1 p.m. were believed to be friends of the deceased, who Ropp estimated to be in his late 20s.

Cmdr. Geoff Huff with the Ames Police Department provided no new information, but said the department is investigating the incident.
