Iowa State guard Matt Thomas didn’t practice Sunday, and it was unclear if he practiced Monday afternoon while dealing with an ankle injury, coach Steve Prohm said Monday.

Thomas hurt the ankle against Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 20 and was limited to just 18 minutes in Iowa State’s win against Texas Tech on Friday.

But Prohm made it clear he plans to play Thomas in Wednesday’s game against No. 2 Baylor in Waco, Texas.

“if he can’t practice today, I’d rather sit him out and have him ready for Wednesday,” Prohm said. “We’re gonna need him and his perimeter shooting for sure. I haven’t heard anything yet. If he sits out today, it’s not a big deal, but he’ll play Wednesday for sure.”

Thomas is averaging 11.8 points per game and has been one of the Cyclones’ most consistent 3-point shooters, making 36.4 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.

More on Iowa State’s run against Texas Tech

With about 13 minutes left in Iowa State Big 12 opener against Texas Tech on Friday, Prohm moved to a four-guard lineup of Monte Morris, Nick Weiler-Babb, Naz Mitrou-Long, Donovan Jackson and Solomon Young.

That lineup spurred a run that brought Iowa State back from a double-digit deficit and an eventual victory.

After looking at the game film over the weekend, Prohm analyzed that run more in depth.

“The ball was moving; the pace was good. A lot of good things,” Prohm said. “it’s just a matter of toughness and focus. You watch film, and that’s all what it presents itself. I’ve got to do a better job of demanding offensive execution because when we do, do that, we get offense, we get offense. When we get stagnant, and we do our own free-flowing offense, it’s not very good.”
