Cameron Lard cleared as academic qualifier by NCAA
January 5, 2017
Iowa State 4-star recruit Cameron Lard was ruled an academic qualifier by the NCAA after finishing high school classes in the fall, Iowa State confirmed Thursday afternoon.
Lard is expected to arrive in Ames this weekend. Classes at Iowa State start Monday.
Lard, a 6-foot-9 forward, signed with Iowa State in April, but had to finish three high school classes at Pro Vision Academy in Houston, Texas, causing him to miss the fall semester at Iowa State.
Lard will be immediately eligible to play for the Cyclones, but it remains to be seen if Prohm will redshirt Lard, keeping four years of eligibility, or play him.
Iowa State has struggled inside this season, where Lard could provide a boost. In the 65-63 loss to No. 2 Baylor on Wednesday night, the Cyclones were outrebounded 33-21.
Transfers Merrill Holden and Darrell Bowie have been inconsistent down low, running into foul trouble. Freshman Solomon Young has flashed potential but Prohm has been hesitant to use him more.
“We’re not in a rush of getting [Lard] up here from a standpoint of trying to see if we can get him in here to play and all that stuff,” Prohm said before Lard was cleared. “We just need to get him here, make sure all the I’s are dotted, T’s are crossed, so he’s here and he’s in good standing.”
