Before arriving at Iowa State to continue his lifelong passion of playing hockey, Justin Brown served for three-and-a-half years in the United States Army.

On the third day of his combat deployment in Afghanistan, his platoon was attacked by an Afghan National Army insurgent during a training exercise at a shooting range.
