Iowa State offensive lineman Karson Green, who came to Ames last year via Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, announced Wednesday via Twitter he will be hanging up his cleats because of medical issues.

Green, who was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN, didn’t see the field during the 2016 season after choosing Iowa State over Tennessee State, New Mexico, Houston and East Carolina during the 2015-16 mid-year signing period.

“I started playing in kindergarten and just finished a season at Iowa State,” Green wrote on Twitter. “But at this time I would like to tell every[body] that I have had to take a medical retirement from the sport I love so much.”

Green said he’s on track to graduate in December 2017 and will pursue a master’s degree in sports management.

“Back in October, I started experiencing a lot of medical issues that caused me not to be able [to] perform at the level I wanted to while here at ISU,” Green wrote. “It breaks my heart to stop playing the sport I love so much.”
