Events happening around Ames on MLK Day

Martin Luther King Day is Monday, and a few notable events on campus and around Ames have been scheduled.

A few volunteer events as well as an Ames community MLK celebration will take place, according to the events page on the Iowa State University website.

Crowd-sourced mapping service project at 10 a.m. in room 206 of the Durham Center.

This event is meant for volunteers to help create crowd-sourced maps of the world to help with disaster relief efforts. To be a part of this event you must send an email to [email protected] by Friday.

Upcycling volunteer event at 2 p.m. in The Workspace at the Memorial Union.

Volunteers will cut the form of a shoe out of denim jeans, which will then be shipped to Uganda, where shoes will be crafted for medical clinics with the intention of preventing jigger bugs. This event is open to all ages.

Ames community celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Ames Middle School at 6 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to come and celebrate with songs, stories and cake. This event goes along with the many other events in the Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Series.
