Allegedly Haunted Locations
April 25, 2016
According to folklore, ghosts are supernatural beings that no longer live in the material plane but are still tied to earth due to some unfinished business before their untimely death. Various cultures throughout the world believe in ghosts that either benevolent or malevolent. Here are some locations that are supposedly haunted.
Ancient Ram Inn
The Ancient Ram Inn in Wotten-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom was built sometime around 1145. It may seem like any other inn in small-town England but it is reported the site of two murders. One of the murders involved a previous innkeeper named Elizabeth who was either strangled or hanged in the attic. Legend has it that the inn was built on top of an ancient pagan burial ground that was the site of child sacrifice. The Ancient Ram Inn has been featured in various shows such as “Most Haunted”.
Poveglia Island
Poveglia is an uninhabited 17-acre island in the Venetian lagoon. It was the site of an 18th century quarantine for people with infectious diseases after two ships were discovered to have the plague. A hospital for the elderly was built on the island in 1922 and operated until it was shut down permanently in 1968. It was during that period that doctors performed unethical experiments on the mentally ill patients. The doctor who conducted the experiments eventually went mad himself and threw himself from the hospital’s tower. It was after the closing of the hospital that the island gained a reputation for its hauntings.
Iowa State Univsersity
Believe it or not, the very university you attend was named the fifth most haunted campus by the magazine “Mysterious Heartland”. The most popular haunts on campus include the Farm House (the site of the suicide of Esther Wilson, the wife of former Iowa State president James Wilson), Stephens Auditorium (where the ghost of C.Y. Stephens appears as an apparition of good luck) and Fisher Theater (haunted by the ghost of Frederica Shattack, the founder of Iowa State’s theater program).
