Movie Review: Keanu

Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele started together as cast members on the sketch comedy program “MadTV” back in 2003. It was there they showed a great comedic chemistry with each other. After the cancellation of “MadTV”, they continued their partnership on the show “Key and Peele”. This ignited their careers like never before. This comedic chemistry continues in “Keanu” where the duo have to rescue their kitten Keanu from gangsters in the seedy Los Angeles underbelly. This was the strongest aspect of the film as they naturally play off each other.

This film is similar to the “Jump Street” series of films as they both deconstruct action movie tropes with comedic results although “Keanu” doesn’t break the fourth wall that often. For example, there is a running gag that parodies “The Boondock Saints”. What’s so good about this film is that it takes its ridiculous premise and runs wild with it.

However, the film feels like an extended “Key and Peele” sketch. It’s a funny one nevertheless. I’m not going to spoil it but there was a deus ex machina in the third act of the movie that apparently came out of nowhere. In the movie theatre I was at, I heard several audience members shouting “what” at this revelation. Otherwise, it’s a fun little action comedy.
