A helmet popped off. A 47-yard touchdown. And 15,000 Iowa State fans in attendance.

It’s time for the spring football game in Ames, Iowa.

The spring game on Saturday wasn’t a time for Iowa State to show their star players, but rather see who could impress coach Matt Campbell and his staff. Without wide receiver Allen Lazard and running back Mike Warren, here’s five people that stood out from today’s spring football game:

1. Matt Campbell

This was Matt Campbell’s first Iowa State spring football game, but he handled it like a professional. He stood out on the field and watched every play from the offensive and defensive positions.

He also made sure to talk to the players on the field about what he expects out of certain plays. He showed a different atmosphere than most Iowa State spring football games and a couple players said that they feel like a family rather than a team.

2. Trever Ryen

The wide receiver was effective in all three positions throughout the game. He had a total of 56 receiving yards on four receptions. He also ran the ball three times from behind the backfield for a total of 19 yards.

Quarterback Joel Lanning was happy with Ryen’s performance and sees him becoming one of Iowa State’s top receivers next season.

“Trever [Ryen] has been awesome this spring,” Lanning said. “He earned a scholarship last year and he continues to get climbing up the ladder this year. He’s never taken a step back.”

3. Zeb Noland

The true freshman quarterback Zeb Noland had the opportunity to take the field in front of college football fans for the first time. Noland received most of the snaps for the Gold team, while competing with Kyle Kempt and Kyle Starcevich.

Noland went 6-for-14 for a total of 20 yards, but the eight incompletions were close passes just out of the reach of the wide receiver. Even though Noland had 20 total passing yards, Campbell said he’ll be ready to play in the fall.

4. Mitchell Harger

Running back Mike Warren didn’t take a single snap in the spring game, which meant Mitchell Harger had more opportunities to impress the coaches. Harger ran 15 times in the game with a total of 48 yards including one that he broke for 18 yards.

He also had 43 yards as a receiver with one going for a 24 yard gain. Lanning said he was one of the most consistent backs in the game and he looks forward to having him in the fall regular season.

“I’m pretty consistent and I do things right and I know that’s what coach Campbell and the coaching staff want,” Harger said. “Coach [Louis Ayeni] knows I’m graduating this spring, but I’m coming back for this team and he knows I’ll do whatever can for this team.”

5. Joel Lanning

The starting quarterback showed why he’s the starting quarterback with his performance in the spring game. Lanning threw 11-for-19 with 161 passing yards and a 47-yard touchdown throw to Dondre Daley.

Lanning said he was excited to see the number of Cyclone football fans in attendance. He felt less nervous then previous years as a third string quarterback.

“Last year I was going into the spring game as the number three guy, but now I’m getting reps with the number ones,” Lanning said. “I felt confident and more at ease this season.”

Honorable Mentions: Jordan Harris and Chris Francis

Redshirt senior linebacker Jordan Harris almost was ejected from this spring game. Harris had three tackles and three assists in his last spring game, but one of his tackles will be remembered from this game.

Harris laid a hit on freshman wide receiver Landen Akers during the second quarter that popped off Aker’s helmet. A flag was thrown by one of the officials, but Campbell told them to withdraw the flag. If it were a real game, Harris could’ve been heading to the locker room early with an ejection.

Chris Francis, a redshirt sophomore kicker, showed his leg power just before halftime. The Cardinal team was up 3-0 with five seconds in the second quarter. Francis, on the Gold team, had an opportunity to tie it.

Francis had to kick a 52-yard field goal into the wind, not once, but twice. The Cardinal team iced Francis with their timeouts, but it didn’t effect him as he put it through the uprights twice.

“I wasn’t expecting to get iced in my spring game, but whatever happens you got to take it and run with it,” Francis said. “It felt great to get that kick through the posts, especially my first one in front of a crowd.”
