Harmony, rhythm and fun is what Iowa State’s A Cappella group, Shy of a Dozen, does every time they perform. Comprised of 11 men, this group performs on campus, around Iowa and the country.
Current members are Grant Luther, Harry Daubitz, Alec Sauerbrei, David Norton, Spencer Betts, Marcus Cross, Michael Madison, Nick Hermann, Jake Benda, Karter Ewing and David Carlson.
“The group started in the year 2000,” Said Grant Luther, who is the student leader and sings bass in the group.
Dr. Rodde formed Shy of a Dozen, when he first began working here as director of choral activities, said Luther. To be part of the music ensemble, those auditioning must be involved in the Iowa Statesmen or part of the Iowa State Singers.
“Dr. Rodde oversees the big picture stuff, but as far as rehearsals and organizing gigs go, we are student directed. Grant organizes all of our gigs and makes sure that we are where we need to be,” said Nick Hermann, who sings baritone and tenor.
As a strictly A Capella group, meaning no instruments are used, Shy of a Dozen even has a member, David Carlson, who can beat box to add variation to the songs.
Members of the group decide on music choice, and incorporate fan favorites. Their fun upbeat music can put anybody in a good mood for the rest of the day. Performing songs that you can hear on the radio today, to fun classics.
Music choice isn’t strictly traditional. They use a selection of pop songs, theme songs, barbershop and more.

The group even was featured on Great Day, a local morning show on KCWI, and KCCI news.
Hermann said recently the group signed with Da’Vine Entertainment, a company that books events for the group to perform more.
