Chariot for Women on college campuses?
April 18, 2016
Uber has become increasingly popular on college campuses over the past years to give students rides around Campustown. Recently, Uber has received some bad publicity.
According to BuzzFeed News, a former Uber customer service representative issued screenshots of an Uber database, which showed some disturbing results. The search query showed over 6,000 tickets that were issued to Uber drivers for “sexual assault” and over 5,000 tickets when searched “rape.” Many women feel unsafe when taking an Uber because of these findings or in general since they don’t know their driver.
To make women feel safer, Chariot for Women is launching on April 19. Chariot for Women is an app created by a former Uber driver that provides women drivers for strictly women and children passengers only.
The founder of Chariot for Women, Michael Pelletz, started off as an Uber driver. The idea came to him when he picked up a man who was messing around in the backseat and continued to pass out. Pelletz noticed that he kept reaching into his pocket for something too. He couldn’t help but wonder how horrified he would be if he was a woman and how he would’ve handled that situation. Pelletz’s wife considered to pursue a career as an Uber driver but then backed out because she was scared of situations like the one her husband was in. That’s when he came up with this safer alternative for women passengers and drivers.
Chariot for Women also does thorough background checks before they hire anyone to drive around other women. To ensure an even safer driving experience and environment, when a passenger requests a ride, a “safe word” pops up on both the passenger and driver’s phone. The safe word is the same on both ends. If the driver says the correct word, the ride will start. But, if that driver does not have the same word as the passenger who requested the ride, the passenger knows not get into that chariot and continue to look for the correct one. The passenger will also be able to view a picture of the driver she has requested along with the license plate number so she can be sure she has the correct chariot.
