Friday night’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Jim Duncan Invitational set the tone for the ensuing ISU women’s track and field performances during the weekend.

An ISU trio consisting of freshmen Kelly Naumann and Grace Gibbons and redshirt senior Andrea Toppin kicked off the strong performances for the Cyclones with a sweep of the top three spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Distance runners Kate DeSimone and Bethanie Brown, who hadn’t competed in an outdoor event since the 2014 outdoor season, had a 1-2 finish in the 1,500-meter run to start day two for the Cyclones.

The team earned another mid-distance event win in the 800-meter run with freshman Erinn Stenman-Fahey leading a 1-2-3-4 ISU sweep. Evelyne Guay, Perez Rotich and Maddie Nagle finished in second, third and fourth, respectively.

Senior hurdler Alyssa Gonzalez placed first in the 400-meter dash, and sophomore Jhoanmy Luque rounded out the first-place ISU performances after getting the win in the 100-meter dash.
