Iowa State volleyball introduces new assistant coach
March 3, 2016
The ISU volleyball team introduced Jen Malcom to the Cyclone family on March 2 as the new assistant volleyball coach. This new hire came after the departure of Jon Newman-Gonchar, who is the new associate head coach for Arkansas.
Malcom was a former Iowa State volleyball player from 2006-2008 as a middle blocker under coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. Malcom was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 2011-14 and at Tennessee in 2015 before coming to Iowa State.
As a coach, Malcom formed a strong middle block for Tennessee as well as recruited more middle blockers for their program in the future.
As a player, Malcom played at Syracuse for her first two seasons before transferring to Iowa State. She helped lead the Cyclones to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2007 and an Elite Eight appearance in 2008.
“We are extremely excited that Jen has decided to come back home to Iowa State,” Johnson-Lynch said. “I hired Jen because she is so well regarded as a coach and recruiter. The fact that she played at Iowa State is a huge bonus.”
Malcom will make her first coaching appearance at Iowa State in the next few weeks when the Cyclones start their spring season.
