Iowa State wrestling ends day one in second place

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Iowa State finishes the first day of the Big 12 Wrestling Championship in second place. The Cyclones will be sending three wrestlers in the championship match for their respective weight class as well as having five wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket.
Championship Bracket
Earl Hall started off Iowa State’s championship semifinals against Oklahoma State Gary Wayne Harding. After a couple controversial calls, Hall ignited in the final period and won 16-8 with a major decision. He will be facing off with No. 1 seed Oklahoma Cody Brewer in the 133-pound championship match.
Tanner Weatherman continued the winning success for Iowa State after defeating Oklahoma Clark Glass, 5-1, to advance to the 165-pound championship match. Weatherman will be facing No. 1 seed Oklahoma State Alex Dieringer on March 6.
Lelund Weatherspoon had a low scoring match against Oklahoma Matt Reed in the 174-pound championship semifinals. Weatherspoon scored three points and that was enough to make it a trifecta for Iowa State as he will be wrestling No. 1 seed Oklahoma State Chandler Rogers in the championship match.
Dane Pestano fell short to a run to the championship match for 184-pound after falling, 11-7, to North Dakota State Hayden Zillmer in the semifinals. Pestano will continue wrestling for third place by wrestling Brady Ayers from South Dakota State in the consolation semifinals.
Patrick Downey also fell short to Oklahoma State Preston Weigel in the 197-pound championship semifinals with a final score of 6-2. Downey will be wrestling in the consolation semifinals against Derek Thomas from Utah Valley.
Consolation Bracket
Kyle Larson started the consolation bracket off for Iowa State with a 10-4 win in the first round and advanced to the semifinals because of an injury default from West Virginia Zeke Moisey. Larson will be wrestling Josh Rodriguez from North Dakota State to try and advance to the third place match.
Nathan Boston was eliminated from the tournament after losing in the consolation quarterfinals 4-3. Iowa State will be without a 141-pound wrestler for the rest of this weekend.
John Meeks is eliminated from the Big 12 tournament after a 4-2 win against Zachary Moore from West Virginia and a 4-0 loss against North Dakota State Clay Ream in the consolation quarterfinals. Iowa State will no longer have a 149-pound wrestler for the rest of this weekend.
Logan Breitenbach advanced to the consolation semifinals after defeating Kyle Gilva from North Dakota State with a final score of 13-2. Breitenbach will be wrestling Eleazar De Luca from Northern Colorado for a spot in the third place match.
Joe Scanlan is advancing to the consolation semifinals after defeating to Marcus Malecek from Air Force in the consolation quarterfinals with a 5-4 final score. He will face Dennison from Utah Valley.
