High school freshman Maggie McGraw will be following in her family’s footsteps when she steps on the ISU campus as a collegiate freshman in 2019.

McGraw — who committed to the 2019 ISU women’s basketball class Monday, a source close to the situation confirmed — is just another member of her family that has ISU connections.

Her grandparents have women’s basketball season tickets so she made the trip up to Ames as much as she could. Many members of her family attended Iowa State, and her uncle also played on the football team.

“It’s a dream come true,” McGraw said in a phone interview with the Daily. “Iowa State’s always been my dream school since I was little. My whole family’s proud.”

McGraw played at Indianola High School last season, a team that won 24 games in its first season at Class 5A. She put up 13.7 points per game. She also plays on the All Iowa Attack team, a club girls basketball team that plays in the summers.

Iowa State was interested in McGraw right off the bat and offered her a scholarship on her first day of high school, she said.

“It was a pretty good day,” McGraw said.

McGraw said her greatest attribute is her versatility and her ability to play a lot of roles on the court. McGraw said she wants to improve on her leadership skills in her next three years of high school.

“I just want to improve on being a leader on and off the court,” McGraw said.

McGraw added that she was especially excited to work with ISU coach Bill Fennelly.

“I think that he can push me to grow,” McGraw said. “I’m very excited to work with him and play for Iowa State.”
