Responders save kayaker from almost freezing water

Ames police and firefighters rescued a kayaker who was hanging outside his kayak at Ada Hayden Heritage Park on Monday evening.
At approximately 5:15 p.m., responders received a call about the kayaker, who had been in the water for more than 40 minutes, 150 to 200 feet from shore, according to a press release.
The kayaker, who had been unable to get back into his boat or to land, was rescued by the Ames Fire Department in a rescue boat.
Following his rescue, the kayaker was transported by ambulance to receive medical attention, as the temperature was estimated to be slightly above freezing, according to the press release.
