Leonardo DiCaprio’s Speech

Casey Laktas

It finally happened, Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar! After many years of nominations and losses, he finally secured the award. Shortly after his win, his speech was all over social media and it was widely discussed on different social media platforms.

When actors or actresses win an award they usually don’t have a lot of time to speak so whatever they say is usually well thought out. Leonardo started his speech off like the rest of them, thanking the academy, fellow nominees, the cast and crew, and of course his parents. After all the thanking of the people who have helped him he took a different turn and started talking about the movie and how it was related to the changes of our planet.

Leonardo DiCaprio took his achievement and time to speak to the millions of viewers about the changing of the climate. In his speech he talked about how in order to be able to film the movie, the production team and him had to travel to the southern tip of South America in Argentina to be able to find snow because of the lack of snow where they intially wanted to film.

It is mind boggling to some that 2014 was the hottest year on record and that our climate is changing. During his speech Leonardo stated, “Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”

It is interesting how he said “work collectively together and stop procrastinating” because it is a common sentiment that some people think, individually, that someone else will do it and it doesn’t have to be them. Leonardo wants us all to realize that if there is going to be a change we need to do it together.

It is admirable when actors decide to use their power of speech to help the planet and the people inhabiting it. So congratulations to Leonardo DiCaprio for winning his Oscar and choosing to talk about what he believes in.
