Moser, Uglem come up big in Cyclone Hockey sweep
February 8, 2016
In the first doubleheader matchup of the two-week road series, Cyclone Hockey had the chance to regain its spark with the Central States Collegiate Hockey League Tournament quickly approaching.
Leaving Bensenville, Ill., Cyclone Hockey accomplished just that. The team headed back with a sweep under its belt against a team that has previously shown it can keep up with the Cyclones.
This weekend was no exception, as both games ended by only a few goals difference.
“You’ve got two good teams going against each other and both teams are battling really hard,” said forward Tony Uglem. “[There was] good goaltending on both ends and it’s just tough to get [an] open space for good scoring chances. So it was really just a hard fought battle all the way through.”
With the help of his linemates, fellow freshman Colton Kramer and Aaron Azevedo, Uglem found the open spaces and recorded two goals Friday night and another on Saturday, increasing his goal tally for the season to 20 and extending his point streak to eight games.
“We were getting pucks to the net, they were going in the back and it just worked out well,” Uglem said. “[We were] moving the puck around well and getting big opportunities.”
But Uglem wasn’t the only one who stepped up big this weekend.
After last weekend’s losses to Central Oklahoma, it was announced before Friday night’s game that junior Derek Moser would be starting in net over the consistent starter Matt Goedeke.
“Well [Moser] played last weekend. [And we] thought he did well so we thought we would give him a chance and he played well in practice this week,” said coach Jason Fairman.
Throughout this weekends matchup Moser stopped 28 out of the 29 shots that came his way Friday, as well as 28 out of 30 on Saturday.
“I was excited, I was happy to find out I was getting a chance this weekend,” Moser said.
Sweeping Robert Morris this weekend not only helped the team get back on track for their seeding for the CSCHL Tournament, but it is also giving them momentum for the second half of the current two-week road trip.
“Our thoughts are that it’s playoff hockey every week,” Fairman said. “We play week in and week out now that it’s a playoff hockey situation.”
Before traveling to face Lindenwood, currently the No. 2 team in the nation, getting the sweep and continuing with the mentality that it is currently playoff hockey is just what the team is looking for.
But as far as preparing for that next matchup goes, the team is doing what it does best; focusing on one opponent at a time.
“Have a big week of practice, work hard, get back to what we do best and I think if we continue to play the way we are we’ll keep winning games,” Uglem said.
