ISU forward Jameel McKay’s status for Saturday’s game against Texas is still up in the air, but ISU coach Steve Prohm said McKay is on track to end his suspension and play against the Longhorns.
McKay was suspended indefinitely last Friday for a violation of team rules that Prohm later described as “practice related.” McKay has missed a pair of games since being suspended. Iowa State went 1-1 without McKay, beating Oklahoma State but falling to Texas Tech.
Prohm said he had a series of positive talks with McKay, and if all goes well at today’s practice, McKay will likely play on Saturday.
“So far, so good,” Prohm said. “We have practice here in a little bit. We’ll practice, I’ll meet with him afterwards.”
Prohm said Iowa State would likely make an announcement after practice regarding McKay’s status for Saturday’s game.
McKay’s teammate and close friend Monté Morris said he’s looking forward to getting McKay back and thinks the suspension has been beneficial for McKay.
“It’s actually been positive,” Morris said. “He’s ready to embrace his role and he’s just ready to have fun again and I’m happy for him.”
Prohm did say that if McKay plays, he will not start. Forward Deonte Burton will get the start against Texas and McKay will come off the bench for the Cyclones. Prohm was noncommittal about whether that would continue into the future.
“That’ll be game-to-game, but for right now Deonte will start,” Prohm said.
Jameel McKay has not been made available to the media since his suspension and thus was not available for comment.
