ISU women’s track, field in fifth after day one of Big 12s

Four different ISU women’s track and field athletes and the team’s distance medley relay squad contributed to the 28 points the Cyclones scored on day one of the Big 12 Indoor Championship.

Iowa State is currently in fifth place, while Texas Tech leads with 43. 

Iowa State’s jumpers and distance runners did the most damage for the Cyclones, combining for 24 points in the long jump and 5,000-meter run. 

Kate Hall scored eight points in the long jump with a second-place leap of 21 feet 1.50 inches, and teammate Jhoanmy Luque added six more with her mark of 20 feet 10.75 inches.

Distance runners Perez Rotich and Erin Hooker continued the scoring with a combined 10 points in the 5,000-meter run. Rotich finished third in 16:21.24, while Hooker placed fifth with a time of 16:25.25. 

The ISU distance medley relay team concluded day-one action with a fifth-place performance, scoring four points and bringing Iowa State’s point total on the day to 28. 

Five ISU runners advanced to the finals of their respective events after posting qualifying times during prelims Friday. The finals will take place Saturday. 

Hall will run in the 60-meter dash; Madison Nagle and Evelyne Guay will both compete in the 1,000-meter run; and Jasmine Staebler and Erinn Stenman-Fahey will run in the 800-meter run. 

Katie Reeves and Christina Hillman will lead off day two of the Big 12 Championship in the high jump and shot put, respectively, at noon Saturday.

Luque will represent Iowa State in the triple jump, and seven ISU runners — Kelly Naumann, Grace Gibbons, Abby Caldwell, Madison Nagle, Maryn Lowry, Anne Frisbie and Evelyne Guay — will compete in the 3,000-meter run. 

Day two will conclude with the 4×400-meter relay. Emma Whigham, Staebler, Alyssa Gonzalez and Stenman-Fahey will run on the ISU team.
