ISU wrestling takes down Northern Iowa

ISU wrestling traveled to raucous West Gym in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to wrestle Northern Iowa Friday night.

The Cyclones won 18-16 over the Panthers.

The meet started off at 197 pounds. Junior college transfer Pat Downey made his season debut, winning 5-2.

Marcus Harrington, who had been the Cyclones wrestler at 197, wrestled at heavyweight for this match. Harrington lost to No. 17 Blaize Cabell by decision, 9-4.

After heavyweight the lineup turned over and Kyle Larson was tasked with wrestling No. 7 Dylan Peters at 125 pounds. Larson avoided giving up bonus points, losing by decision, 9-7.

No. 8 Earl Hall turned things around quickly for the Cyclones pinning No. 15 Josh Alber of Northern Iowa in 4:17. Nate Boston carried that momentum winning his first match at 141 pounds, 12-6.

Dante Rodriguez got the call at 149 pounds, filling in for the injured Gabe Moreno. Rodriguez lost by major decision 14-4.

Ronaldo Rodriguez-Spencer dropped his match at 157 pounds 12-6. Tanner Weatherman also lost his match in sudden victory 3-1.

Lelund Weatherspoon needed to get a win with two matches remaining and the team score sitting at 16-12 in favor of the Panthers. Weatherspoon got the job done for ISU wrestling winning by decision 6-2.

It all came down to Dane Pestano at 184 pounds. Pestano secured the win for the Cyclones with the 8-2 victory.
