6 fun facts about about the 63rd Annual Metropolitan Opera Auditions—Iowa District

- More than 1,500 young singers participate in the Metropolitan Opera National Council (MONC) Auditions in 41 districts, with this year’s auditions being held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall.
- With three tiers of competition leading to a Grand Finals Concert with the Met orchestra, MONC Auditions are designed to help up-and-coming opera singers jumpstart their careers, with guest judges and immediate feedback.

- According to the Iowa State Center’s Web Page, singers must be between 20-30 years old and are judged on “vocal quality, timbre, size of voice, technique, musicianship, and interpretation of arias representing different styles and languages.”
- A number of today’s popular opera stars—Ben Heppner, Renee Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Thomas Hampson, Samuel Ramey and Deborah Voigt—went through the Met Opera National Council Audition process.

- Audience members can vote for their favorite singer, and the winner will receive an Audience Choice Award, which is new this year.
- After this free event, which is open to the public, there will be a reception during the judges’ deliberation with an opportunity to meet the singers.
