Buy a Love Your Melon Hat

Haley Brase

Think with your melon and buy a Love Your Melon hat. For every hat sold, a child with cancer will get one for free.

An idea sparked in an entrepreneurship class at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, two college students, Zach and Brian, founded the idea while they were sophomores in college. Their idea began in October 2012 and is running successfully in 2015. In 2014, there were two nationwide tours.

According to Love Your Melon, there are 45,000 children with cancer in the United States, and Love Your Melon has reserved hats to donate to each and every one of them.

Children with cancer are delivered their hats by “superheroes” also known as college students. Love Your Melon reports over 225 colleges across the nation have Love Your Melon Ambassadors who dress up as superheroes, go to hospitals and personally deliver the hats. Iowa State University is one of the colleges that have Love Your Melon Ambassadors.

Fifty percent of the proceeds made by Love Your Melon will go to the Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch. The Pinky Swear Foundation is for families with a cancer patient. They have programs that help with house payments, have reliable transportation, have enough food in the house for the family and have a place to stay in the hospital, so they do not have to leave their child. It is a foundation helping the family afford their child’s expenses while trying to find a cure. CureSearch says it all- trying to find a cure for cancer.

According to Love Your Melon, 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and in addition to the 45,000 they have dedicated their services to already, they intend to put a snuggly hat on every child’s melon dealing with cancer.

On their website, Love Your Melon has beanies, cuffed beanies, caps, shirts and accessories in an assortment of colors. Order your Love Your Melon hat, and make a child’s day in return. I ordered one, and I wear it all the time!
