Cyclone Hockey wins in shootout

Cyclone Hockey went to a shootout for the third time in its past four games on Satuday at Illinois, but for the first time, the Cyclones were able to pull out a victory, 3-2 over Illinois.
Eric Cruickshank scored the game’s first goal 14 minutes into the game to give the Illini the lead.
Nobody scored for the rest of the the first and second period, but the Cyclones had to overcome adversity.
Ten penalties combined between the two teams ensued following the Illini goal before a five minute major penalty was called on James Mcging of Illinois. Mcging was called for slashing and was ejected from the game.
Moments later, Tony Uglem tied the game with a power play goal at the 8:33 mark in the third period. Just over three minutes later, fellow freshman Michael Addison also found the back of the net. Addison gave the Cyclones the lead at 11:56 in the final period with just 12 seconds left to go on the power play.
The Cyclones were resilient, killing seven Illini power plays, including two 4-on-3 opportunities. Despite being resilient, Cyclone Hockey was unable to keep Illinois off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.
Grant Stueve tied the game with under a minute and a half to go in regulation to send the game into overtime, but neither team was able to score. The game went to a shootout for the second consecutive night.
The teams went scoreless through the first three rounds before Colton Kramer beat goaltender Joe Olen in the fourth round. Josh Belmont was able to match Kramer’s goal for Illinois.
The teams came up empty for the next four rounds until Chase Rey connected on the game winner in the ninth round. His goal gave the Cyclones the win and two points in the overall standings.
Cyclone Hockey will travel west to Colorado on Thursday to face off against Colorado before a two-game road series against Colorado State on Friday and Saturday.
