The Lowdown
The ISU women’s basketball team unofficially kicked off the 2015-16 season with a 79-36 exhibition win against Midwestern State on Nov. 5 at Hilton Coliseum.
The Mustangs stayed with the Cyclones for the majority of the first half as Iowa State led 32-24 at the break. The Cyclones quickly pulled away in the second half, however, beginning the third quarter on a 21-0 run, preventing the Mustangs from scoring for nearly nine minutes.
The Cyclones carried their momentum into the fourth, finishing the game on a 47-12 run.
Iowa State played without freshman TeeTee Starks, who was out with a concussion, and sophomore Bryanna Fernstrom, who was serving a one-game suspension due to a public intoxication charge in September.
X-Factor
Freshman Bridget Carleton: Carleton, who made her collegiate debut on Thursday, led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the field. She also led the Cyclones in minutes, playing in 36 out of 40 minutes.
Carleton, an Ontario, Canada native, led the ISU scoring effort from the beginning, notching four straight buckets in the first quarter to put Iowa State up early. Carleton also finished with five rebounds and one assist.
