Caroline’s Cart is Rolling Into Stores
November 15, 2015
Feeling a human growing inside you, reading books on what to do if your baby has a fever, going through the agonizing pain of giving birth, but you are informed if your newborn has special needs
It should not affect the amount of love and affection given to your child, but there are changes such as how your child will maneuver through life that a book may not help you with.
Drew Long, mother to a child with special needs named Caroline, founded the idea for Caroline’s Cart, a shopping specially designed shopping cart for infants with special needs. While shopping in stores, a parent does not have to worry about moving a wheelchair through people and cluttered stores.
Knowing her daughter would outgrow a normal seat in a shopping cart, Long designed a seat large enough for a growing child to sit in. She founded Parent Solution Group, designed the cart, applied for a patent and received support from Technibilt to make her goals a reality.
The handles twist open making it easy for children to get in and out. The seat of the cart has straps to hold in a child and was made to hold weight up to 250 pounds according to Technibilt. There is a break in the back of the cart that locks up the wheels on the front, so while a parent is putting their child in the cart, it will not move.
Supermarkets, hypermarkets, shopping centers and malls will offer Caroline’s Carts as a service to families of over 1 million disabled children in America according to Technibilt.
For example, Target is testing Caroline’s Cart in several stores, and if the tests are successful, more stores will offer them, so check on their website or look in your most visited stores to see if they offer them.
If the store does not have Caroline’s Cart, talking to store manager can be a helpful decision because they may not know about it but would like to offer it to their customers.
Janet, of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, approached a service area manager of Wegmans, a supermarket located on the east coast, about Caroline’s Cart. Janet has a blind daughter with other disabilities and wanted the cart to be offered for her and other parents at the store. Because of Janet, the specialized cart is now offered at her store. Since then, almost every Wegmans has Caroline’s Cart.
Over 29,500 people have liked Caroline’s Cart on Facebook. Many parents are taking pictures of their children in the carts, expressing how happy they are to finally have an easy way to shop and make their children happy.
Not every grown children has the ability to walk for long periods of times, this design will help parents shop and help children feel comfortable.
