After a slow start and a narrow win against Colorado last Friday, Steve Prohm and the No. 7 Cyclones lived up to expectations in their 2015-2016 home opener.

Iowa State (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) cruised past Chicago State (1-1, 0-0 WAC) 106-64 on Monday, with all 11 Cyclones seeing the court.

The lowdown

After missing their first three shots and falling behind 4-0 early on, the Cyclones were able to turn things around quickly, going on an 8-0 run.

The Cyclones continued producing short offensive runs but couldn’t put the Cougars away, allowing them to stick within 10 points through the first 15 minutes of play.

While they did shoot just 3-of-15 from behind the arc, the Cyclones finished the half shooting 50 percent from the field — thanks to Jameel McKay’s 18 first half points — giving them a 49-35 lead going into the locker room.

The Cyclones came out of the half fast. Abdel Nader dropped six straight points in the first 1:16 of the second half, giving the Cyclones a 20-point lead.

It was smooth sailing from there on out, with the Cyclones going on a 15-0 run to put the game out of reach.

McKay led Iowa State with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Abdel Nader scored 17 points on the night, and Monté Morris and Naz Mitrou-Long both finished with 14 points.

X-factor

The first half belonged to Jameel McKay. The center was nearly unstoppable in the post, ending the first half with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Of his 18 first half points, 12 came from dunks.

McKay recorded a double-double on the night just minutes into the second half. He was taken out of the game with about eight minutes remaining and wouldn’t return, finishing with 11 rebounds, 9 dunks and a career-high 25 points.

Up next

The Cyclones will next take the court Monday, Nov. 23, when they host Chattanooga at 7 p.m. The game will mark the second round of the Emerald Coast Classic. Iowa State will travel to Nieceville, Fla., on Nov. 27 for the third and fourth rounds of the tournament.
