ISU wrestling falls to Virginia Tech

No. 13 ISU wrestling lost 32-3 to No. 6 Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at Blacksburg, Virginia.

The Cyclones lone win came from No. 8 Earl Hall at 133. Hall needed overtime to take his match 3-1 over Kevin Norstrem.

Both Logan Breitenbach at 157-pounds and Quean Smith at heavyweight lost by major decision to top ranked opponents. Breitenbach lost to No. 3 Nick Brascetta 17-6 and Smith lost to No. 2 Ty Walz 21-7.

Blayne Briceno filled in for Gabe Moreno at 149-pounds as Moreno was serving a suspension. Briceno fell 6-2 to No. 12 Sal Mastriani.

The 141-pound weight class has been the center of a lot of talk recently. John Meeks wrestled at Virginia Tech in an attempt to redshirt Dante Rodriguez. Meeks lost in a close dual that needed overtime 3-1.

Both Tanner Weatherman and Lelund Weatherspoon wrestled their first matches at their new weights of 165-pounds and 174-pounds, respectively. No. 6 Tanner Weatherman was upset by Dave McFadden 4-3. No. 3 Zach Epperly beat No. 17 Weatherspoon 4-1.

The 125-pound redshirt freshman, Nathan Boston, lost his first dual 3-2. Dane Pestano lost his dual 13-6 at 184-pounds.

The Cyclones forfeited the 197-pound weight class.

Cyclones return to action on Thursday at Hilton for a double-header against Midland University at 5:30 and Boise State at 7:30.
