Vigil takes place for Oregon shooting victims
October 7, 2015
A candlelight vigil will take place on campus in honor of the victims of the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., last week.
The vigil will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Memorial Union.
Local religious leaders will lead prayer, and community leaders will also talk about the importance of preventing tragedies, like the events at Umpqua, from happening at Iowa State.
On Oct. 1, 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer opened fire on Umpqua’s campus. He killed nine people and injured nine others before shooting himself.
Authorities said Harper-Mercer was enrolled at the community college. According to the Associated Press, law enforcement officials said Harper-Mercer left behind writings that talked about not having a girlfriend and how everyone was crazy.
The memorial event is being hosted by Cyclones Against Gun Violence. The group is not an official ISU student organization.
