Halloween alternatives

Abbigail Epperson

It is officially All Hallows’ Eve and it is also officially freezing outside. Regardless of the weather, there are some people who just don not enjoy going out to celebrate Halloween. For those of us who feel too old to go trick or treating or too cold to care either way, here are some fun activities to keep your Halloween busy and spooky.

1. Homecoming, of course!

If you don not feel like trick or treating, stop by the homecoming game tomorrow night at 6 p.m. Jack Trice Stadium will be filled to the brim with anxious football fans and you could be one of them. Homecoming is a great way to show some Cyclone pride and avoid the Halloween chaos.

2. Break out the old Halloween movies

From Disney to horror, there is a Halloween movie out there for everyone. “Halloweentown” is an absolute classic, but if you feel you’re ready to move onto the big leagues, there are always the scarier genres. If you are feeling up for a spook, check out “Evil Dead”, “The Conjuring” or everybody’s favorite evil doll, “Chuckie”.

3. Anti-Halloween Party!

When in doubt, party it out! Get a few friends together and throw yourselves an anti-Halloween bash. Go look for the only candy at the stores without ghouls and goblins littering the wrappers and buy all they have. Wear colors that have nothing to do with Halloween. Watch a Christmas movie and bask in your hatred of Halloween. Better yet, skip Halloween altogether and just celebrate Christmas already!

4. The more abandoned the better

If you want to go out and do something for Halloween but you’re not in the costume spirit, get a few friends together and go find an abandoned haunted house somewhere. Go ghost hunting or sneak off and pop back up to spook your friends. Make the most out of the creepy side of the holiday! You can also go the easier route and find some good spook houses to go to. The only downside is the cost and the possibly unrealistic scare factor.

5. Reverse trick or treat

If you or a close friend has a car, go out, buy some candy and spread the Halloween cheer! You can drive around town throwing candy out the window at people. Please try not to aim for the head or other important extremities. Instead, if you are feeling particularly nice, you could walk around your dorm knocking on doors and giving out candy. It is kind and you can always keep the leftovers to gorge on later.

6. Forget the treats

While candy is great and all, harmless pranks are even better. Most people tend to forget the other half of the Halloween motto and it is up to you to bring it back in style. Embrace your inner trickster this year and feel free to pull out all the stops! Remember to keep them spooky, safe and fun. This is Halloween after all.
