Puerto Rican Student Association takes steps to share culture

The Puerto Rican Student Association Cultural Night was held in the great hall of the Memorial Union on Friday.

The night began with a lecture from Xavier Serbia, financial commentator and host of CNN Dinero at CNN en Espanol.

Serbia began his career as a member of the boy band Menudo and lost a log of his money due to poor financial decisions

Serbia became a successful businessman after graduating from Trinity College in Connecticut with a master’s degree in economics.

Serbia decided to use TV as a tool to democratize financial decisions. He felt comfortable and natural on TV from his work with the band Menudo and uses his time on television to educate people about good financial decision making.

Serbia calls himself more of a communicator than a journalist.

When Serbia’s lecture was finished people filled their plates and the live band began to play.

Della Rivera-Casanova, a senior in ecology, said she was there to “support her Puerto Rican friends”. She also came for the food and dancing.

As people began to finish their meals many headed to the dance floor to enjoy the live band.

Many people said the reason they attended the event was for the great food and dancing.

ISU Dining catered the event and served traditional Puerto Rican cuisine that included pulled Puerto Rican pork, rice and beans.
