Concert Review: Finish Ticket stops by the M-Shop

Finish Ticket hosted an intimate night of danceable rock tunes at the Maintenance Shop on Sept. 3.

The band took the stage around 8:15 p.m. and immediately opened with two new tracks off of their upcoming EP, “When Night Becomes Day.”

“Scavenger” featured soaring group chants, while “Wrong” picked the tempo up and was accompanied by a stellar light show.

“Doctor” brought the fans into sing-along territory. Front man Brendan Hoye truly entered his element on this track with thunderous drums and a melodic guitar solo, adding to the energy.

That energy did not fade as 2013 single, “Catch You on My Way Out,” and new track,“Color,” followed and got the crowd dancing more and more as the songs went on.

“[This next one is] more of a fall song, looking back on the summer,” said Hoye introducing “In the Summer,” which sparked positive reactions from the crowd.

“Lying Through Our Teeth” let the audience breathe for a brief moment before the band exploded into a cover of “When You Were Young” by The Killers.

“We weren’t going to play this one, but hopefully you will like it,” said Hoye.

After a moment of discussion the band then sprang into another cover of “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by The Darkness, which featured an impressive vocal range from Hoye.

“Any reasonable band will go into a ballad after that one,” said Hoye before starting “Pockets.”

Finish Ticket’s 2013 single,“Tranquillize,” was a massive hit with the crowd and featured another heightened series of group chants that most of the crowd participated in.

The climactic “Bring the Rain” brought the set to a close with a spiraling descent into a controlled chaos that grew with intensity, making it a satisfying closer.

Finish Ticket brought a much-welcomed energy to the Maintenance Shop and will likely be a pleasant surprise for audiences who will see them open the show for Twenty One Pilots on tour this fall.
