September 21, 2015
The Iowa State Cyclones are in 2nd place after the first day of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships.
After the first two rounds of the Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., the Cyclones are four strokes under par to place them one stroke back of Kent State.
Iowa state shot a 287 in the first round and had the lowest 2nd round score with a 277. That 277 is the 2nd-lowest score in Iowa State Women’s Golf history.
The Cyclones were paced by freshman Chayanit Wangmahaporn at 4-under-par which has her in fourth place individually. Wangmahaporn shot 2 strokes below par in both the first and second round. Wangmahaporn had eight birdies and an eagle through the first two rounds to keep pace.
The Cyclones also got below par play from the senior from Sweden, Cajsa Persson and sophomore Celia Barquin who both shot 1-under-par through the two rounds. Persson shot 2-over-par in the first round but then used a streak of five birdies in eight holes to lower her score below par.
The 3rd and final round of the tournament will start tomorrow morning, where Iowa State hopes to come from behind and take the tournament victory.
