Titus: Trump is not right for America
September 2, 2015
Facebook, Twitter and the newspapers. Many, if not all, media outlets are talking about the upcoming 2016 presidential election, and the major candidates from each party.
For the Democratic Party we hear names like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, but with so many candidates who have thrown their hat in the race the Republican nominee, one name stands above the rest in the polls — Donald Trump.
Trump has been a successful real estate developer and businessman who decided to enter the race to run for president. Trump started going up in the polls after he rudely demoralized Hispanics and Latinos in America, illegal or not, during his announcement speech. It was unbelievable that people were believing what he was saying, and then it dawned on me.
Trump running his big mouth about illegal Hispanic immigrants sounded all too familiar. It sounded like many other conservative opinions in the state and perhaps the entire nation. People in their homes are not filtered when it comes to what they have to say about illegal immigration, and we now have a Republican candidate who is not afraid to say those things in front of millions of Americans.
“The Donald” is saying what he believes people are thinking, and it seems to be working.
Trump is a businessman who is not afraid to step on any toes, and while he gets plenty of backlash from the Hispanic community for his comments about building a wall and calling all Hispanics violent criminals, he continues to rise in the polls. Seeing Trump ahead in the Republican polls makes me question the moral standpoints of Republican voters.
I consider myself a moderate Republican, but I am also a woman, and the comments Trump has made against women are not comments I would like my future president to have made.
More importantly, when Trump was addressed on the issue in the first Republican debate, he didn’t apologize or justify what he had said. Trump instead said he was only referring to Rosie O’Donnell, referencing their toxic history.
He later said Megyn Kelly, Fox News political commentator, was being too hard on him and called her a “bimbo” on social media. That is not the kind of retaliation I would want to see from a president.
Trump’s comments on illegal immigrants are the ones receiving the most heat, and rightfully so. But he is now under fire from Latino actors and musicians who are speaking out against him.
Immigration reform has been a topic of discussion for years in this country, and Americans seem genuinely concerned about the steps being taken to stop illegal immigration.
Trump had the worst possible proposal for a solution to the immigration problem, but he did offer a solution, and people like hearing he is going to do (so he says) something about it.
Building a wall and kicking out illegals and their American-born children may be an extreme and expensive way to handle the situation. But people start listening when solutions are offered, despite the dirty details of said solution.
Americans know there is a problem with the process of immigration in the United States, and Donald Trump is offering to fix the problem, even if it is in the worst way possible.
People who don’t know much about politics recognize Donald Trump. We have seen him on TV and we know he has been a success in the business world, but the United States is not a business. It is a country and it must be run as such.
Presidents don’t become CEOs when they are elected. They must consider how people think and feel about the topics rather than going with what they think will work. That is simply not how democracy works.
Trump has called politicians in Washington “stupid” and “idiots,” and when the American people feel like the government isn’t getting a lot accomplished, they tend to agree with these comments. On this subject, he is a voice for the people who believe there needs to be a new face in Washington, but he’s taking advantage of the desire for change.
The man is saying what people want to hear, and that could put this nation in a very bad spot in the long run. It would truly surprise me and make me question the state of this country if the next president of the United States is Donald Trump.
