Mississippi school shooting

A history professor in Mississippi has been shot in his office this morning around 10 a.m., sending the university into a lockdown.

Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., went into lockdown shortly before 11 a.m. Monday when reports of an active shooter were sent out campus-wide.

According to the Associated Press, Ethan Schmidt, a history professor, was shot in his office on campus shortly before 11 a.m.

Authorities are searching for Shannon Lamb, who was officially named as a suspect in the shooting and a manhunt is underway.

Lamb had taught geography and education at the university since 2009 and had recently earned his doctorate in the spring of 2015, the Associated Press stated.

Lamb is also a suspect of a woman’s murder in Gautier, a town 300 miles south of Cleveland.

According to a recent report released by the FBI, there have been 160 active shooter incidents in which the gunmen are “engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area” between 2000 and 2013.

Active shooter incidents apply to events that include Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Aurora movie theater.

The FBI report also stated that during that period of time, 39 of these incidents have taken place in an educational environment such as a K-12 school or higher education location. This is the second-highest location for active shooters to engage.

The FBI’s report excluded other incidents including drug and gang violence as well as incidents that did not put others in danger, such as someone committing suicide in public.
