With Cyclone Hockey graduating nine players after last season, it needed freshmen to step up.

In the first game of the season, Tony Uglem and the rest of the Cyclone freshmen answered the call Friday night when the Cyclones took on the Division II Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

Four different freshmen scored goals for the Cyclones, including two by Tony Uglem, as the Cyclones routed the Cougars 9-0.

A pair of freshmen, Colton Kramer and Michael Addison, started off the scoring for the Cyclones in the first period. Kramer’s goal came off an assist from freshman Jake Arroyo and Addison’s goal came off an assist from Uglem.

Uglem netted his first goal late in the second period and scored his second goal in the third period at the 9:55 mark.

The freshmen scoring barrage was topped off by a Trevor Sabo goal at the 13:05 mark.

Cyclones will play the Cougars again tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena to complete the weekend series.
